Civilian Response to Active Shooter Events (CRASE)

In light of what happened in Uvalde, some are wondering about programs available at the Odessa Police Department. This one has been around for several years.

The Civilian Response to an Active Shooter Event training, also known as C.R.A.S.E., is conducted by the Odessa Police Department to groups, businesses and churches seeking more knowledge about how to prepare for an active shooter situation. It also provides an assessment of where they stand in terms of preparation and what steps they could do to improve their safety.

Several OPD officers have been certified by A.L.E.R.R.T to conduct C.R.A.S.E. trainings, shortly after the Sutherland Springs Church shooting back in 2017. A few OPD officers were also certified by the American Crime Prevention Institute in 2019 to conduct security assessments at churches, schools, and businesses. The C.R.A.S.E. trainings and security assessments are both free services offered by the Odessa Police Department.

The team gets annual refresher courses in the training and assessments, as mass shootings are always different and there are case studies for different types of events.
