What To Do During A Boil Water Notice.

UPDATE: 6/18/2022 2:20 p.m.

On June 14, 2022, the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality required the City of Odessa Public Water System TX0680002, to issue a Boil Water Notice to inform customers, individuals, or employees that due to conditions which occurred recently in the public water system, the water from this public water system was required to be boiled prior to use for drinking water or human consumption purposes.

The public water system has taken the necessary corrective actions to restore the quality of the water distributed by this public water system used for drinking water or human consumption purposes and has provided TCEQ with laboratory test results that indicate that the water no longer requires boiling prior to use as of June 18, 2022.

El 14 de junio del 2022, la Comisión de Calidad Ambiental de Texas requirió que el sistema público de agua de la Cuidad de Odessa TX0680002, emitiera un Aviso de Hervir Agua para informar a clientes, individuos o empleados que debido a condiciones que ocurrieron recientemente en el sistema público de agua, el agua de este sistema público de agua debía ser hervida antes de que se usara como agua potable o para otros fines de consumo humano.

El sistema público de agua ha tomado las medidas correctivas necesarias para restaurar la calidad del agua distribuida por este sistema público de agua utilizada como agua potable o para otros fines de consumo humano y ha proporcionado a la TCEQ resultados de pruebas de laboratorio que indican que el agua ya no requiere hervir antes de usarse a partir del 18 de junio del 2022.

UPDATE: 6/17/2022 2:50 p.m.

At 1:45pm the City pulled the samples required by TCEQ to rescind the Boil Water Notice. The analysis on these samples take 24 hours to complete. 

Once we have received the lab results and they show that the distribution system has been thoroughly flushed and minimum levels of chlorine residual has been maintained throughout the distribution system, as required by TCEQ, and no bacteria is present the City can rescind the Boil Water Notice.  

A formal notice will be sent to citizens when the Boil Water Notice has been officially lifted.  Until then, we are still under the notice.

Director of Public Works & Utilities, Tom Kerr, gives an update on the water situation and explains what is being done.
Bottled water is still available at the Ector County Coliseum from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

UPDATE: 6/16/2022 3:00 a.m.

The water plant is back online and pressurizing. Citizens have started to see water coming through the lower elevations of the city though getting water to the higher elevations is taking longer than anticipated. Our desire is to have those areas restored by the morning.

Again, once the system is fully restored, we can commence the 24-hour time frame required to ensure that the water is safe and there is no bacteria present before rescinding the boil water notice. A release will be sent advising citizens of when it is safe to begin using water normally.

Person’s ages 75 and over or those with special needs should contact Dawn Weaks with Connection Christian Church at 432-332-2954 to receive assistance with drinking water and/or potable for their household needs. 9am-2pm

Ector County Coliseum will be the only site for citizen water distribution from 8am-5pm.

UPDATE: 6/15/2022 11:58 a.m.

Sherwood Aquatic Center, Woodson Aquatic Center, Floyd Gwin Pool, Jurassic Jungle Sprayground, and McKinney Sprayground will be closed today due to the conditions from the water line repairs.

Repairs to the line were completed at approximately 3:45 a.m. this morning, but a Boil Water Notice is still in effect until further notice. The City has begun to turn the system back on slowly to maintain the strength of all lines. After full pressure is reached, the city will remain under a boil water notice for the next 24 hours.

UPDATE: 6/14/2022 9:20 p.m.

A press conference was held today at 4:00 pm. Several City officials were available to speak regarding the 24” transmission water line break at the corner of 42nd and San Jacinto.

Tom Kerr, Director of Public Works and Utilities explained that as the line is repaired, we will begin to turn the system back on cautiously to maintain the integrity of all lines. He further stated that once the system is restored, we can commence the 24 hour time frame required to ensure that the water is safe and there is no bacteria present before rescinding the boil water notice. A release will be sent advising citizens of when it is safe to begin using water normally.

Moving forward, citizens will be notified when water will be distributed from the Ector County Coliseum site. Person’s ages 75 and over or those with special needs should contact Dawn Weeks with Connection Christian Church at 432-332-2954 to receive assistance with drinking water and/or potable for their household needs.

Tomorrow, water delivery to nursing homes will begin at 8 am and Ector County Coliseum will be the only site for citizen water distribution from 9 am-2pm.

City Offices will continue to be closed tomorrow until 1 pm.

A major water break has occurred at the intersection of 42nd & San Jacinto. Crews are actively working to close valves in the system to isolate the break, however, this is taking longer than anticipated.

Water levels have reached a point that a Boil Water Notice has been issued. Citizens should expect a significant loss in water pressure and/or no water at all. A significant portion of the community remains without water at this time.

Citizens should boil water prior to using for cooking, drinking, brushing your teeth, making ice, washing dishes or any other consumption. Please refer to the attached map for affected areas.

The City of Odessa will be setting up Water Distribution Sites (P.O.D.S) at the following locations beginning at 1:40 pm:

McKinney Park-625 W. Pool Rd.

Ector County Coliseum-4201 Andrews Hwy, FM 1936 & W University

*You are limited to 1 case of water per vehicle.

Another notice will be sent out notifying citizens when the Boil Water Notice has been lifted and normal water use may resume.

Due to a line break, the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality has required the City of Odessa Public Water System TX0680002 to notify customers to boil their water prior to consumption (e.g., washing hands/face, brushing teeth, drinking, etc). Children, seniors, and persons with weakened immune systems are particularly vulnerable to harmful bacteria, and all customers should follow these directions). 

To ensure destruction of all harmful bacteria and other microbes, water for drinking, cooking, and ice making should be boiled and cooled prior to use for drinking water or human consumption purposes. The water should be brought to a vigorous rolling boil and then boiled for two minutes. 

In lieu of boiling, individuals may purchase bottled water or obtain water from some other suitable source for drinking water or human consumption purposes. 

When it is no longer necessary to boil the water, the public water system officials will notify customers that the water is safe for drinking water or human consumption purposes. 

Once the boil water notice is no longer in effect, the public water system will issue a notice to customers that rescinds the boil water notice in a manner similar to this notice. 

Please share this information with all the other people who drink this water, especially those who may not have received this notice directly (for example, people in apartments, nursing homes, schools, and businesses). You can do this by posting this notice in a public place or distributing copies by hand or mail.
